Overture 4th Anniversary!

 A week late but we wanted to put this up anyway. August 29th was Overture's 4th anniversary and though we are deep in the busy right now we managed to celebrate a bit with brief camping excursion. An appropriate end to the completion of the first of our animations for Hauschka, coming out SOON!

遅くなりましたが、8/29はOvertureの4周年記念日でした。

制作の合間に一日だけ時間をもらって、Overtureの始まった日と同じシチュエーションでもある、森の中へのキャンプに二人で行ってきました。
木々を拾い集めて火をおこしたり、川で野菜を洗ったり、夜はただ炎と暗闇を見つめてこれから始まる嵐のような日々の事を考えたり話したり。
 たった一日のキャンプでも、音楽もネットもない所で炎を見ていると滋養のある濃い時間を過ごせて驚くほどリフレッシュできました。

この夏の終わりの日から始まるOvertureの5年目は、今までとはまた違う景色が見えてきそうな予感です。
今の所は全て水面下に隠れてますが、間もなくハウシュカのアニメーションのワールドプレミア(!)を始めとして、いろいろと発表できるようになります。どうぞお楽しみに！

the postcard exhibition for the Sunshine Studio Tokyo





We will have a piece in the “Greetings from ________” Postcard Exhibition at the Sunshine Studio in Tokyo.

Over 50 artists were asked to use a local postcard to create their own piece. Our postcard is a landscape of Autumn in Massachusetts. (above)
The show's opening is Saturday Sept. 6th.

今週末6日よりスタートする、東京の千駄ヶ谷にある「Sunshine Studio Tokyo」でのポストカード展、“Greetings from ________” Postcard Exhibitionに参加しています。

世界各地の参加者が自分の住んでいる場所の観光ハガキ（ご当地ハガキ？）にペイントしたり、コラージュしたりして東京に送ってきたものを展示するそうです。

Overtureは、Greetings from Massachusetts” という事でニューイングランド地方の農場に訪れる紅葉の風景のハガキにしました(上の写真)。

他にも50組を超える参加者がいろんな国／地方のハガキに自分流に加工したものを展示するそうなので、お時間のある方はぜひ行ってみてくださいね。

このブログでも、SSTに届いたハガキをアップして紹介しています。

New Animations for Hauschka

The first part of our most ambitious project of the year is coming to fruition!
...
An animation triptych for composer/musician Hauschka!

The three songs featured in the animations will also appear on Hauschka's new album Ferndorf, coming out in September.

We don't want to give too much away in terms of story right now, but we will say that the animations follow the interactions of a fibrous, fluffy monster named Kapok and a mossy monster named Bryum. Feel free to look up their names for hints to the nature of these forest creatures!

Look here and there for updates on the story and the video in the coming weeks! The first of the three animations will be upon us soon!



現在制作中のアニメーションのお知らせです。

今、私達はドイツの音楽家Hauschkaとのコラボレーションで3部作のアニメーションを制作中です!

Hauschkaは、ジョン・ケージよりスタートしたといわれるプリペアード・ピアノの流れを汲む演奏家・作曲家です。
プリペアード・ピアノとは、ピアノの弦に木とか鉄、ゴムなどを挟んで演奏と同時に音を鳴らせるというもので、同時に何人もの人が演奏している様でとても面白く、二人とも個人的にも大好きな音楽家です。

9月にFatCat Recordsからリリースされる彼の新譜「Ferndorf」より3曲を使用して、前編・中編・後編でひとつの物語になる予定です。

このアニメーションは、イソップの童話「北風と太陽」のような昔ばなし／フォークテイルを下味として作られたオリジナル作品です。
深い森の中で暮らす「Kapok」（カポック）と「Bryum」（ブリアム）という二人？二匹？のモンスターが登場します。

ちなみに、Kapokはフサフサでベージュ、Bryumはモサモサでグリーン×ブラウンです。
（この二つの名前で検索すると、彼らについてのヒントが出て来るかもしれません…）

Floating World Animation Fest 2008


Our animation 「Sesame」will be screening at the Floating World Animation festival in Portland,Oregon!
The second annual Floating World Animation Festival - part of SUPERTRASH at the Bagdad Theater. Saturday, Aug. 16th - 6:30pm.

Sesame is the short animation we did in 2006 for our exhibition, "Sweatlodge" at the MailArt Gallery in Oita, Japan. It was our first animated venture into the world of Chim and Harold and we plan on returning to it in the near future.

来る8/16、「Floating World Animation Festival」にてアニメーション作品「Sesame」が上映されます。

このフェスティバルは、ポートランド（オレゴン州）のバグダッドシアターで開催される「SUPER TRASH」という映像フェスティバルの一部として開催されるもので、ポートランドのコミックショップ「Floating World Comics」が主催しています。

 けっこう昔の作品なんですが、店主のJasonが何よりも「Sesame」を気に入ったそうで、ご指名頂きました。
 先日公開されたトレイラー（上の映像）では、ちょうど1分あたりの所でこのアニメーションのキャラクター、Chimが一瞬出ています。

2006年の初夏の大分での個展「SWEAT LODGE」の時に制作した3分程度のアニメーションです。

実はこの作品は物語の導入部で、ここでは出せなかった物語の背景やキャラクター、設定など山ほどあり、それが二人の中で日々構築されては崩されて、より良い状態を求めてグニュグニュと動いています。
そうしながら、いつかこのアニメーションの本編の制作に打ち込める日が来る事をとても楽しみにしています。

本編より前にフェスティバルで導入部が上映されるという事、これもまた「Sesame」の事を思い出してというメッセージなのかもしれません。

この上映が決まってから二人で「Sesame」のストーリーや世界観などについて改めて話し合う機会が増えました。

今作ってるものが落ち着いたら（それは早くても11月頃ですが）、また少しずつ動き出していきたいです。

KiraKira 2CDs from different country

Still deep in some big projects, we wanted to show off the packaging differences between the two versions of Kira Kira's Our Map to the Monster Olympic, plus the poster for her release party.
Also wanted to mention - we heard there was a big diorama-type of display of the cover at the Tower Records in Shibuya. Those things get changed around pretty regularly so it may already be gone, but certainly exciting news for us still.

今、２つ作っているうちの一つが制作の佳境に入ってます。6月からほんとに毎日毎日制作…前回の反省点を踏まえて変更したり、新しく試してみたいものを入れたりしながら進んでいます。

その中で、先日KiraKiraから小包が届いて、アイスランド盤のCDが家に届いたので紹介しますね。


Afterhours version on the left, Smekkleysa version on the right. The Japanese packaging is a bit brighter, shinier and smoother while the Icelandic version has a nice matte and the colors are bit more subdued. Both offer a slightly different perspective on the artwork.
左が日本盤、右がアイスランド盤です。
日本盤の方が光沢があり、はっきりとキャラクターが見られて美しいです。
アイスランド盤の方は細かな凹凸のある紙に印刷されていて、これまた霧に包まれた感じがよく出ていていい感じです。

This is inside the Smekkleysa version. The Afterhours version has the map sliding in the space between the front and inside cover.

And this is the release party poster. It's huge! We will frame it. Some day perhaps, we will print a full version this size and... well, we'd probably frame that too.
CDと共に、先日アイスランドでおこなわれたリリースパーティーのポスターも入ってました！思ってたよりずっと大きかったです。これは嬉しい贈り物☆

KiraKira "Our Map To The Monster Olympics"

So! Kira Kira's album is released! It is up for sale here through the Japanese label, Afterhours, and now also here on the Smekkleysa label website.

We received our copy of the album the other day and it is a fantastic expansion of Kira Kira's already dark/mysterious/joyous sound. It overflows with creatures of every kind, creeping over the foggy landscape.

Anyway, here are some photos of the packaging (drawn and designed by us!)


Overtureがアートワークを担当したKiraKiraの新譜 "Our Map To The Monster Olympics"リリース！
今現在確認できるのは、日本盤を扱うAfterhoursのサイトのみですが、アイスランドでも先月の26日に発売されています。近いうちにアイスランドのレーベルSmekkleysaのサイトでも取り扱いが始まる事と思います。

先日、アイスランド版より一足早く日本盤が手元に届きました。
このアルバムを通して聴くのは、私たちにとっても初めての経験。 múmのメンバーを始め、多くのミュージシャンの参加によって、彼女の不思議で暖かく、面白怖いような世界がより色濃く、強くなっている曲達でした。
届いたCDを写真で少し紹介します。

本日6月26日、KiraKiraの新譜"Our Map to the Monster Olympics"がいよいよアイスランドでリリースされます。
今夜、アイスランドの首都レイキャビックにあるIdnóでリリースパーティーが開催されます。
私達は会場に行けくてとても残念だけど、告知ポスターにイラストレーションという形で少し参加しています。（さらにここから幽体離脱で魂のみ会場に！…行ければいいのに！）

このイラストは、彼女のアルバムの中に封入されるポスターに使われたもので、タイトルにもある"モンスターオリンピックのマップ"という設定で描いた大きな作品です。
実物が手元に届くのが楽しみ！その時はまたここで報告します。

映画祭速報／BREAKING NEWS

Our animation Rhubarbidoo, music video for múm, will be screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this summer.

We were invited to take part in Mirrorball, the music video portion of the film festival, screening our animation in Nordic Noise, a grouping of music videos for musicians from Iceland, Finland, Sweden and other Nordic countries.
The screening will be held on June 27th. Full details here!


第62回エディンバラ国際映画祭 "Mirrorball"作品上映決定！

2008年6月18日から29日までイギリスで開催される 第62回エディンバラ国際映画祭にて、Overtureの制作したmúmのミュージックビデオ 「Rhubarbidoo」が 公式招待上映される事が決定しました！

この映画祭は、スコットランドのエディンバラで毎年6月に(昨年までは8月)開催される、世界最古の国際映画祭です。
上映されるのは「Mirrorball/ミラーボール」という、高い芸術性を有するミュージックビデオなどを扱うイベントの、Nordic Noiseというプログラムです。
Youtubeなどで公開されて多くの人に見てもらうだけでなく、こうして国際的な映画祭で上映される事、とても嬉しいし励みになります。

ワインラベル原画展

ひさしぶりに東京で展示です。

代田橋のカフェCHUBBYと、恵比寿のバー VinSantoが合同主催する、ワインラベルの原画を展示するグループ展に参加します。
CHUBBYでは白ワイン用のカラー作品、 VinSantoでは赤ワイン用の白黒作品を24組のアーティストが展示し、さらに、実際にCASTELVECCHOのボトルにラベルを貼った物を１本1000円で販売するそうです。

私達は残念ながら会場に顔を出せませんが、本当にひさしぶりの日本での展示なので、お近くの方はぜひぜひ見に来てください。

ここで、ラベルデザインだけ一足お先に公開ですー！ 原画はぜひ会場で…

We're participating in an interesting group exhibition next month in Tokyo at the cafe, CHUBBY's in Daitabashi and the bar, VinSanto in Ebisu. The exhibition is also sort of a competition. All twenty-four participating artists were asked to design wine labels, a red and a white, which will be the art displayed in the exhibition. The designs will also be printed and stuck on actual wine bottles to be sold at the two venues. At the end of the exhibition, whichever design sells the most receives a prize and a pat on the back.
Unfortunately we can't attend, even if we get the pat on the back, but we're hoping friends will pop in and get drunk off the wine with our designs.
The bottles are going for 1000 yen...which is very cheap.
CHUBBY's will be holding the exhibition from June eighteenth to July fourteenth, displaying the white labels with an opening party on June twenty-second from 5:00 - 10:00 PM. 2000 yen to get in including one drink and food.
VinSanto will be holding the exhibition from June twenty-third to July twentieth, displaying the red labels and holding the closing party on July twentieth from 5:00 - 10:00 PM. Same situation with the door charge.

VELI magazine


VELI Magazine, from Finland, showed up on in our mailbox. We have no hope of reading it (it's in Finnish) but it is a very cool-looking magazine. We did some illustrations for an article about turning thirty and how thirty is the new age to be. It is the new twenty one or eighteen or what have you. The illustrations came out very nice in the magazine as you will see below.
フィンランドの「VELI magazine」にいくつか作品が掲載されたため、フィンランドの編集部が送ってくれていた雑誌が、今日到着しました。





This little guy was the at the beginning of the collection of articles ours was in. He's letting the readers know good things are ahead.
あるコーナーのタイトルページです。
下の写真の男臭さと、一匹飛び跳ねているやつの可愛らしさがいい感じのギャップです。







On the left page there are two human monster amalgamations who have grown to become very powerful spirits. The little creatures celebrate their growth as if they were small gods. They are the new power of thirty - hopefully their shape is obvious.
On the right page are more human monster spirits, not quite as developed and powerful as the thirty. This is eighteen and twenty one, the power ages of yesteryear. Little creatures run from them to join their friends on the left page.

文章の内容は（雑誌に書いてあるのはサッパリ読めませんが、事前に英語で内容を聞いてます）新しい30代について書かれたものです。
以前は"新世代"を表していた18や21という歳。今では30歳がその意味を受け継ぎ、新しいパワフルな世代になっているという感じで書かれていました。

上の写真ですが、左のページでは今まさにパワフルな新世代となった30代の"野性"のサン男と、"瞑想"のゼロ女の周りを、小さなスピリットたちが走り回っています。
一方、右ページでは、”見た目にこだわる”21歳と、"動物風味を体に多く残す"18歳が佇む目の前を、スピリット達が30歳を祝うため、歩き出しています。

Yesterday Plan B issue 33 arrived - we did an illustration for a review of a collection of Alireza Mashayekhi and Ata Ebtekar's work titled, Persian Electronic Music Yesterday and Today 1966-2006. The article is tied in part to an article on Radio Golha we also did an illustration for a few months back. Photos below!

KASINO A4 #7 Family issue



The latest issue of KASINO A4 arrived yesterday. The theme is family in this issue and each copy ordered comes personalized with the customer's name on the cover.
We did an illustration for one of the articles. Photos below!

昨日、イラストを寄せたフィンランドの雑誌、KASINO A4が届きました。
今回は先行オーダーした人の名前を表紙にひとつひとつ入れるという試みです。私達へ送ってくれたサンプルにもサービスで名前を入れてくれました。









Also we were blown away by Jaimie Warren's photos in this issue, especially the awesome ganguro photograph which you can kind of see below - she's second from the left.

パラパラ見ていくと、記事の中に「おっ、渋谷！」と思ってよーくよーく見ると…

実はこの人、Jaimie Warrenという人で、「VICE」のフォトグラファーもやってる人らしいです。他にもKASINO誌上で彼女のいろんな場所で撮ったセルフポートレートが紹介されてました。

この渋谷写真のインパクトの凄さと彼女のちゃっかりガングロチームに入ってるぶりがなかなかいい感じです。

日本でも、青山ブックセンターなどにこの雑誌は置かれてるんで、この写真を（あ、私達のイラストも）じっくり見てみたい方はどうぞ。

Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the opening for our six week show at Mocha Maya's. It's going to be a very easy going affair and we are looking forward to it. We've been caught up in so many big projects lately it's great to have something as fun and laid back as this.

Below are some shots of the new pieces we did for the show. The rest we already put up in flickr. We were considering uploading each image over a longer period...but we just couldn't wait.

明日から始まるMocha Maya'sでの展示のための準備が、さっき終了したところです。

今回はカフェでの展示なので、新作＋旧作数点を持っていって、サクッと展示して終わり！そして美味しい珈琲を頂きながら、お客さんをのんびり待ち受けるだけ…になって欲しいです。

Overture Caffeine Exhibition at Mocha Maya's

Hello!

Opening this Sunday, 05/04 and running for six weeks, Overture will be having a show at Mocha Maya's Coffee House and Espresso Bar in Shelburne Falls, MA.
In this show we will be focusing on twelve new works using watercolor and ink and soaked in coffee - in mind of this particular venue.
The opening this Sunday is from 4:00 - 7:00 PM.

5/4より6週間、Mocha Maya's というカフェでイラストレーションの展示を行います。
作品は、新しいものを12点。コーヒーで染めた紙に、水彩とペン画のミックスです。

ここに初めて訪れたのは１年半前。
その頃は、人気のためすでに一年先のスケジュールまで埋まっていて(!)展示は実現しませんでした。でも今年は、年始にあらかじめ声をかけてくれたのでやっと実現。
ちなみに、今現在も制作中…ほほほ　

同時進行で、２つのアニメーションを制作中です。
どっちが何に使われるかは、制作が進んでもっとハッキリ実現が近づいてからの報告になりますが、夏頃にはこの鼻血ブーの内容をお伝えできると思います。
